Diana Vreeland, the fashion editor, once said that pink is the navy blue of India. “If that’s true, then it’s the navy blue of Mexico, too,” says Pam Rocco of Santa Cruz, California. “I know, because when I was in my twenties, I rode the bus from one end of Mexico to the other. Remembering the late-night bus station bathrooms painted hot pink or bright blue, I started a series of Mexican quilts.”
Ring Around the Rosy is the fifth quilt in the series that Rocco made. The large one-block design allowed her to use her “gaudiest” fabrics in hot, highly saturated colors, and is an ideal pattern for showcasing those large-scale prints you can’t bear to cut into small pieces.
