A TRIBUTE

The last step in every issue produced in Golden is a final look at the magazine, a digital look via a website (no paper proofs anymore), and then a signoff that the job is ready for the press. As I was going through the pages I lingered over our Tribute to Bonnie Leman, founder of Quilters Newsletter. Bonnie died this summer, but her influence endures. If you have been quilting a while you might know a bit about her. If you are new to quilting, please pick up our February-March 2011 issue (on newstands January 18, 2011) and read the 5-page article. We present a eulogy written by her son and a timeline which encompasses Bonnie’s life and the magazine’s history.

She has left a remarkable legacy, both professionally and personally. And while I never worked with her, I am grateful for the magazine she created and the opportunities it has given me. Rest in peace Mrs. Leman, your magazine is in loving hands.

You have done a wonderful thing. Every quilter today has been influenced by Bonnie Leman, whether they know it or not. Without her, we would not have the billion dollar industry that exists today. This personal tribute, our mourning thoughts, the love she left–all very priceless.

I first discovered quilting and “Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine” over 25 years ago. I am a long-time subscriber. Bonnie Leman introduced the topics in each issue as if she were speaking to her friends and her warmth gave us all “permission” to spend time creating in this medium. Although the magazine is now in safe and caring hands, Bonnie’s touch is missed. The legacy that Bonnie Leman left to us is extensive and greatly appreciated.

I started to quilt seriously in 1973. There were few books available, no quilt groups or guilds, and not very many classes. But there was Quilters’ Newsletter. I subscribed, and am still a subscriber, with every issue carefully kept. I have subscribed to other magazines, but this is the one I kept and go back and read.

My one question is — is there a picture of Matthew Leman in the tribute? I looked forward to seeing him on his birthday issue and would love to see him as a grown-up.

So sad to see Bonnie Leman has died. I remember the photo’s of her, and her little son in early QNM. I started with QNM in 1978 and am grateful to Bonnie’s voice. Australia hadn’t caught the quilting bug back then, so quilting patterns were hard to find. I loved her warmth and am grateful for all she’s contributed.
I hope there is a photo of her son too!
