I taped my first video a couple weeks ago. Quilters Newsletter and our other publications offer web video and DVDs with lessons on quilting and sewing topics. Wow. I have a greater appreciation for those newscasters who can portray great sincerity. And how about the sportscasters who fill hours of airtime when weather delays their scheduled event. I have a new appreciation for the on-air personality.
My video will probably edit down to about ten minutes of information. The topic was Auditioning Fabrics for a Quilt. I talked about defining value; which parts should be light and which dark. We all love to work with color, but it is value that brings art to life. Your eye will go to the area with greatest contrast; where the lights and darks are most defined. So I determine my values, then choose my colors, then rough cut fabrics to build a block; switching fabrics out until I get the best result.
So to celebrate my video, I’m giving readers a chance to win this stack of white and black fat quarters designed by Ro Gregg for Northcott. Leave a comment by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, April 22, for a chance to win. One comment per person, please. Open to those who haven’t won something from Quilters Newsletter in the last 90 days.
[Please note: this giveaway has ended. Congratulations to Linda S, winner of this beautiful bundle!]

Value is so important and can really do a lot of the design ‘work’. I love black and whites — pick me, pick me.
Love the contrasts!
You always need to have some black in your quilts!!!
I sure could use these beautiful fabrics…doing a black and white and red quilt for my daughter. Need some inspiration for the border! This could do it!
can’t wait to watch the video. would like some help with values I seem to just throw colors together
Always wanted to do a black and white quilt but haven’t had the courage to start! Those are just the ticket to get me started!
Congrats on taping the video. Great fabrics in the FQ pack.
It drives me nuts when people ask this? Fabric has color. To understand how to use all the characteristics of color takes knowledge of value, tone, hue, etc. Properties that artists use all the time. Quilts can be art.
I love black and white
I love black and white.
I am a sucker for any black and whites, they add that wow factor.
Thanks for the giveaway. I’d like to make a black and white quilt some day.
Love black & white. I just love material.
Love, Love black and white…I would love to add these to my small collection.
This would add to my small collection of black and whites. So far I don’t have enough to make anything.
Would love to add this black and white bundle to my stash! Thanks for the contest.
Nice designs!
It’s exciting that these blacks and whites have such defined value. What a great lesson.
I would really appreciate this bundle. Thank you.
Love the black and white:)
I would so love to win this. I am working (at this point in my mind) on a great black and white art quilt and those would so help.
I am a black and white convert. 4 of us worked on a quilt for our 1913 quilt show in black and white with red floral applique. It is striking! I have a problem with values, so looking forward to your little video.
Beautiful fabrics. I made one B & W quilt for a son and it is LOVED~
Congratulations on your video. Thanks for the chance to win some great fabric.
Love black and white!
I am making a black, white and red quilt for my granddaughter. These Northcott fabrics are just what I need to complete it. Please, please choose me!
These colors are not my usual palette, so I do not have enough in my stash.
I have never tried a black and white quilt. A negative against a positive color would be fun to try.
Eager to see the video. It’s the most challenging part of quilting for me. love colors but it is not intuitive, the choosing is agonizing. the local shop hop features black and white and used a lime green to greate a great contrast, which I would never thought to do. thanks
Love blacks and whites. Seems I could always use more–I want to do a black and white quilt someday. Thanks for an opportunity to win this fabric.
i have a pattern for a black and white quilt i am dying to make. these fat quarters would be just the thing needed to accomplish this goal.
I’m envisioning a black and white quilt with a surprise block with color!!
I’m planning on making a black and white quilt for my niece for a wedding gift. This fabric would be beautiful.
