A great idea…?

Or have I been hit with a Confundus spell?
I’m Gigi, and I just joined the Quilters Newsletter Editorial team about two weeks ago. I am so excited to be here! On my first day, as much of a whirlwind as it was, it was hard not to notice the signs all over the office about the Halloween potluck. With all these crafty people here, I had to come up with some cool costume and a dish to share. But with the huge changes that come with starting a new job – new schedule, new commute, new people, new priorities and so on, my Halloween dreams were put aside in favor of learning the job. Of course.
But I still had to come up with a costume. It had to be something easy, preferably already in my closet, warm (I hate being cold so no sexy nurse outfit for me!) and ideally immediately recognizable so I wouldn’t have to explain it to people.
Once I decided what I would dress up as (Harry Potter. I just love Harry Potter) the rest started falling into place. I figured I’d try for Prisoner of Azkaban era, since he mostly wears his Hogwarts uniform. Grey pants, sweater, white shirt. Done. I got some round glasses, added some tape on the bridge, subtracted the tinted lenses, done. I can draw on my face as well as anyone, so lightning bolt scar, done. But it wasn’t recognizable enough.
I needed a cool Gryffindor scarf, and even though I am a fair knitter, there was no way I could knit one in time. But I could SEW one! Hooray for my fabric stash! I found the maroon and goldenrod fabrics I needed, cut them into strips and before I knew it, I had a loooong and very convincing Gryffindor scarf.
It did get me thinking, though. Quilted scarves! Am I right? As with most quilted items, the design and color choices are almost endless, and they are warm and easy to assemble. I folded my striped scarf in half long-ways, but you could easily make a double-sided one. Or a uniquely shaped scarf. I think I might try to make one with brighter colors in the center that fades to neutrals at the ends. That way the pretty colors will be near my face when I wear it, and the long ends will co-ordinate with most of my wardrobe. And that is just one idea of many.
What do you think? Quilted scarves?! Is this a great idea, or did I drink too much butterbeer? Have people made these before and I just never heard about it? Will this revolutionize the world of scarf-wearing? How many should I make this winter? Wouldn’t a quilted scarf be a nice Christmas gift? Would I be able to take it with me when I Apparate? Are you going to make one? So many questions! I intend to find out the answer to each and every one.

Maybe it would work if you put the lightest of batting inside. You would want it to be soft around your neck.

I used a bamboo/cotton blend batting. It’s soft and lightweight, but has just enough body to be warm and drape nicely.

Hi, Gigi. Welcome to Quilters Newsletter. I think your scarf sounds great. If I could make them, I would make several for Christmas gifts. I have a pattern for some kind of scarf in one of my many magazines.
