Giving back

I hope everyone has been enjoying all our giveaways recently! The most recent one, for our 15,000 Facebook likes is a doozy. Go enter if you haven’t already! We love having the opportunity to share fabrics, notions, books and tools with all of you, and we really appreciate your participation.

What would you do with all that stuff if you won? You’d probably make a quilt or two. But then what would you do with those quilts? If you are a typical quilter, you’d probably give it away. Whether to someone you know and love, someone you feel deserves it or someone less fortunate, a quilt is the perfect way to show that the recipient is cared for.

I like to stay on top of what’s going on in the quilting world, and I cannot tell you how many stories I’ve read about quilters and quilt groups who work so hard making quilts to give away. I wish I could list them all but there are so many. We try to pay homage to them on our Pinterest Quilt Stories board but somehow I don’t think we have pinned them all. Not only are quilters some of the most clever, creative and competent people, they are also compassionate and caring. Individuals and quilt groups donating their work locally and national charity programs like Project Linus and Quilts of Valor all provide warmth and a little extra love to those who need it most.

Members of the Indiana Army National Guard's 713th Engineer Company presented with quilts from the Quilts of Valor organization.

Check out any of these charities’ websites, or contact your local quilt groups and guilds for information about charitable opportunities if you want to get involved.

I wish everyone could win! We do what we can to get you some free new fabrics or quilt supplies every now and then, and you’ll turn it into something amazing that one lucky person will love forever. Good things beget good things and we all love that, so make sure to enter to win, then you can enter others in your quilt giveaway to spread a bit more quilty joy around the world. Good luck to you all!

Just because there is a nice big prize to give away right now doesn’t mean that we’ve got nothing left to give. Keep checking our website for more chances to win. Like my momĀ  says about her weekly lottery ticket purchase, “You can’t win if you don’t play!” We always announce our giveaways on Facebook and Pinterest, so join us there too. Have a great weekend!

Our local quilting group in Fl, the Recreation Plantation Quilters, is a bunch of approx 60 dedicated quilters. So far this year we have made and donated, 100 strip quilts to homeless children. 105 pillow cases to the Ronald McDonald House in Gainesville, Fl. We are currently busy making assorted items to be sold. Proceeds go to a local organization that provides food and other items to needy families. I am extremely proud to be a member of this group. All this from a bunch of snowbirds, then we disburse and do the same thing in our summer homes.

Pat, that is just the type of wonderful, selfless work I was thinking of when I wrote this. You all are doing such good work, and I’m sure the people who benefit from your quilts are more grateful than you will ever know!

I watched the Quilts of Valor special done by Fons and Porter and was moved to tears. I only discovered quilting a few months ago but I look forward to making quilts to give to both family and friends and to the organizations dedicated to giving to those in need.
