Batiks by Design
Patti Oakley, of Murray, Kentucky, is the owner of Batiks by Design, a fabric import business. Patti lived in Indonesia for several years and acquired traditional batiks during her stay. After using some of these fabrics in a class, she found that there was a demand for them. Patti purchased her first traditional batiks to sell online while visiting Jakarta in the summer of 2006. "After I set up my website and made my first sale," she remembers, "I was hooked!"
The traditional designs found in Patti's fabrics are taken from motifs that have been used for almost 1,000 years. The first colors used in making batiks were indigo and sogo, a brown made from a local plant. As more dyes became available, they were added to the patterns.
Batiks by Design does not carry fabrics made using the traditional wax-resist methods because creating these intricate designs would be very labor intensive and very expensive. By purchasing machine-printed fabrics, Batiks by Design can offer quilters and fabric artists batiks that are reasonably priced.
Patti's online company carries a large selection of printed traditional batiks, Bali batiks, and an assortment of books and patterns. For more information and to purchase her fabrics, visit batiksbydesign.com.
